Keynote Speech
Talk One
Keynote Speaker: Professor Takashi Washio, Osaka University, Japan
Topic: Measurement Oriented Machine Learning for Advanced Sensing Technologies
Abstract:
Based on recent progress of device and system techniques including nano and quantum technologies, various advanced sensing approaches are emerging. However, the outputs of these sensing devices are noisy and contain incomplete information in many cases, because they target extremely small objects or weak signals. These features hamper the measurements of the targets by using the device centered sensors. On the other hand, machine learning techniques rapidly growing are suited for estimation of the target objects from noisy and incomplete information. This talk describes recent machine learning studies for the measurements and their applications to the advanced sensing techniques to overcome their difficulties.
Biography:
Takashi Washio is a full professor in Department of Reasoning for Intelligence, The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka University which is located at Ibaraki City, Osaka, Japan. His department in Osaka University focuses on basic studies of machine learning and data mining and is a leading research group in Japan. His current main research interests are machine learning principles for high dimensional big data in the basic study and machine learning techniques for scientific advanced sensing in the application study. Takashi Washio obtained his M.E. and Ph.D. in the field of nuclear measurement and instrumentation control at Tohoku University, Miyagi, Japan, in 1985 and 1988, respectively. He was previously a visiting researcher of a Nuclear Reactor Laboratory of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), USA from 1988 to 1990, a senior researcher of Mitsubishi Research Institute from 1990 to 1996, and an associate professor in Osaka University from 1996 to 2006. He has received many awards including the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence (JSAI) Contribution Award in 2008 and IBM Faculty Award in 2017.
Talk Two
Keynote Speaker: Professor Young-Ho Lee , Korea Maritime & Ocean University(KMOU), South Korea
Topic: Experimental and CFD studies to optimize the turbine system applied to wind, hydro and marine renewable energy
Abstract:
The renewable energy requires high efficient energy converter called turbine used in wind energy, micro-hydro power and several marine energy. Nearly 20 years experiences on renewable energy research from the point of aero dynamic turbine design and its system performance analysis by CFD and experiment will be introduced. In wind energy, a new concept of wind velocity augment device is suggested and its performance is analyzed by CFD and model test by using wind tunnel. Several hydro turbines such as Francis, Pelton, cross-flow turbine are investigated in terms of its efficiency improvement for micro hydro application to environmental sustainability. Tidal current and wave energy turbines study for sea proto type test are reported. Especially, a new wave energy converter(WEC) called KMOU WAVESHIP is mentioned in more details for commercial development. Some previous and on-going collaboration activities with foreign developing countries on renewable energy development are also introduced.

Talk Three
Keynote Speaker: Associate Professor Hemanshu Pota, The University of New South Wales, Australia
Topic: Distributed Generation Integration for Smart Grids
Abstract:
While the cost of renewable generation is decreasing, the cost of not integrating it in a smart way with the grid is increasing—as evidenced by the recent blackout in South Australia (SA) on 28 September 2016. The SA blackout, instead of a possible brownout, was due to the inability of the renewable generation to form a stable grid without external support and this dependence is detrimental to the renewable energy integration. In a transmission network, such as the SA grid, one may be able to justify a fossil fuel base-load plant but in future distribution systems, the prime location for renewable generation, the network should be stable and highly reliable with decentralised control and without any fossil fuel base-load support. The talk will discuss the type of grid formation which is essential to transform the legacy grid to a smart grid that can integrate renewable and energy storage resources at a much higher and wider participation levels in distribution systems.
Biography:
Hemanshu R. Pota received B.E. from Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering and Technology, Surat, India, in 1979, M.E. from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in 1981, and the Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia, in 1985; all in Electrical Engineering. He is currently an associate professor at the University of New South Wales, Canberra, Australia. He has held visiting appointments at Columbia University, New York City, the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of Delaware; Iowa State University; Kansas State University; Old Dominion University; the University of California, San Diego; and Centre for AI and Robotics, Bangalore. He has published over 140 journal papers, one research monograph, fourteen book chapters, and over 280 international conference papers. He is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, and an Editor-in-Chief of Technology and Economics of Smart Grids and Sustainable Energy, a Springer journal. His current research interests are in the dynamics and control of power systems and control of atomic force microscope. He works as a consultant with GHD Consultants on power system dynamics and control related matters.
Talk Four
Keynote Speaker: Professor Jinjun Chen , Swinburne University of Technology, Australia
Topic: Big Data - Big Application
Abstract:
Right now, Big Data, Data Science or Data Analytics are being on wide interest in industry and academia. During this talk, we will discuss two questions based on my research industry engagement practice. The first one is business gain from such buzz words. This is a practical question from business. Based on my research, big data can help business to identify big niche market opportunity which can grow up to become major markets. For example, by analysing and generalising potential weak connection between previously sparse data sources such as flight booking data and supermarket user data, we can better expand or enhance the market for personal recommendation on flight booking. The second is about how researchers can make a full potential to business. A say is "It's not who has the best algorithm that wins. It's who has the most data" by Andrew Ng (Coursea founder). Data is becoming an important resource equally important to oil. While various public datasets are available to academics or researchers for research evaluation, those datasets may not be suitable or useful and timely for researchers. One way to make full potential of big data is to intensively work with industry because they have timely data. More or less, every industry is doing data analysis yet just on their specific purposes. We will brief our research and collaboration with specific industries.
